Plans to cut school crossing patrols at nine school sites across the Caerphilly county borough have been withdrawn following consideration of feedback from the community.
Caerphilly County Borough Council recently consulted on its draft budget proposals for 2025/26, which included the potential removal of nine School Crossing Patrols that did not meet the National School Crossing Patrol Guidelines assessment criteria.
However, the proposal was amongst the most commented-on within the public consultation and the proposal with which most respondents disagreed.

Road Safety Wales is reminding drivers of their responsibilities when encountering School Crossing Patrols.
School Crossing Patrol officers are an integral part of the community in many areas of Wales; they have often assisted the children, and even the grandchildren, of those that attended the same school many years ago. They are that friendly face that always greets us when we arrive at school and the one we say goodbye to as we make our way home.
They are dedicated and much-appreciated members of the school and wider community who turn out, despite the weather, to keep us all safe when crossing the road.

Pentyrch Primary School celebrated a remarkable milestone recently, as Hazel Davies marked 50 years of service as a School Crossing Patrol.
Known for her motto, "Safe Journey Home" Hazel has dedicated her life to ensuring the safety of children and their families on the roads and, regardless of the weather, she has become a consistent and reassuring presence at the school.
During her time as a Cardiff Council School Crossing Patrol, Hazel has been awarded the British Empire Medal for her services and her commitment and inspirational spirit have made her a beloved figure in the community. She has educated generations on road safety and has even inspired her daughter and husband, John to take up the role.

The Road Safety Wales Awards recognise individuals, groups and organisations that have made a real commitment to road safety, above and beyond what would normally be expected of them.
We would traditionally invite our winners to the annual Road Safety Wales Conference to collect their award but unfortunately we have been unable to host an event this year.
Chair of Road Safety Wales, Teresa Ciano said, "Despite a difficult year for everyone, Road Safety Wales is delighted to be able to recognise so many deserving people who have made a significant difference to the lives of those in their community.

A number of School Crossing Patrol Officers in the Vale of Glamorgan were recognised recently at the council's annual Road Safety Awards presentation, organised by the council’s Road Safety Team. The awards recognise the contribution provided by SCPs working throughout the county.
The award for School’s Crossing Patrol of the Year was presented to Nicholas Latham, a popular member of the St Helen’s School community in Barry; Nicholas helps youngsters cross the busy stretch of road on Tynewydd Hill.
Other award winners included Ruth Grant of Barry, Julie Ellis of Llantwit Major and David Regan, who was the winner for Penarth, Sully & Dinas Powys.

On 10 July at the annual Road Safety Wales Conference, Dawn Davies was presented with a Road Safety Wales Award for her long standing service and commitment as the School Crossing Patrol Officer at St Padarn's Catholic Primary School for over 13 years.
Dawn Davies was nominated for this award by her colleagues in the Road Safety team and Dawn has now stepped down from her position to begin a new chapter in her life.
Kayleigh Tonkins, a member of the Road Safety team said, “A big thank you to Dawn from all her colleagues in the Road Safety team; she has been a pleasure to work with and will be sorely missed by the pupils old and new. This award is just a small recognition to the hard work and dedication she has shown to the safety of the pupils at St Padarn's come rain or shine.”

Popular School Crossing Patrol Officer Sandrea Howells of Stop and Call in Goodwick has hung up her hi-vis jacket after nearly four decades of helping children to cross the road in Fishguard.
Since 1981, Mrs Howells has helped several hundred schoolchildren to cross Vergam Terrace outside Holy Name Catholic Primary School.
The dedicated School Crossing Patrol Officer was presented with gifts and cards by pupils and staff at a special assembly last week, and thanked by Headteacher Abigail Davies for her hard work over many years, “Sandrea has kept generations of children safe, and the pupils and staff alike will miss her very much.”

The unsung heroes guiding Vale youngsters safely across our roads twice a day have been given the recognition they deserve.
At the recent Vale Road Safety Awards, an annual event held at the Council’s Dock Offices, those working on school crossing patrols throughout the county were recognised and rewarded for their contribution to road safety.
The co-ordinators and volunteers of the Kerbcraft Child Pedestrian Training Scheme were also thanked during this year’s presentation.
