Active travel and sustainable travel in Flintshire

Flintshire County Council has secured Welsh Government funding to deliver significant active travel and sustainable travel improvements in Aston and Hawarden.

The upcoming scheme will enhance connectivity along Lower Aston Hall Lane, providing a shared-use off-road footway/cycleway facility. This will link with the recently completed Aston Hill/A494 shared-use path, providing a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the project will deliver a new zebra crossing and essential carriageway improvements which will further support safe and sustainable travel.

The work on Lower Aston Hall Lane has now begun and will last approximately 10 weeks. Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the construction period, with access maintained for residents, local businesses, and the travelling public. Flintshire County Council appreciates the continued cooperation and support of the local community during these essential works, which will deliver long-term benefits for all.

Road safety changes for main Cynon Valley route

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council has announced that important measures to promote and improve road safety will be introduced on the A4059 between Abercynon Roundabout and Cwmbach. This follows a review of the road traffic conditions along the route, which was undertaken in response to an increase in high-severity collisions in recent years.

It is estimated the changes which will improve road safety and only add on average 25 seconds to the journey time in each direction, over the distance of Cwmbach to Abercynon – depending upon the time of day.

In December 2024, the Council announced the review had been undertaken and that officers were developing road safety proposals at key sections of the A4059, the main road through the Cynon Valley. Public notices have since been published detailing proposals for change. The Traffic Regulation Order process has recently been completed.

Funding boost to prevent 30,000 potholes on major roads

An extra £25m to renew Wales’ major roads and prevent around 30,000 road defects and potholes has been announced by the Welsh Government.

The funding boost will see an extra 100km of the strategic road network resurfaced in the new financial year. Roads that are most in need of repairs will be renewed, with thousands of potholes fixed.

Since 2021 the Welsh Government has spent more than £81m on resurfacing around 321km of roads on the trunk network across Wales. Combined with the forecasted spend for 2025-26 this means that by the end of this Senedd term £118m will have been spent to repair more than 500km of road defects and potholes.

Work to tackle known issue of flooding at Dinas commuter route

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council will begin a Resilient Roads scheme at the A4058 at Dinas, to reduce the risk of surface water flooding in heavy rainfall. It will increase the road’s drainage capacity to intercept and convey rainwater away from the road, while reducing the risk of flooding to the local community.

The scheme, from the week commencing Monday, February 3, will aim to tackle a known issue of surface water accumulations where Cymmer Road (A4058) meets Appletree Road, with several flooding incidents having impacted 11 properties since 2012. The scheme has received a 90% contribution from Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Grant and will be completed by the end of March 2025.

The scheme will install additional gullies along the A4058 and divert the highway drainage through a new carrier line, down Appletree Road, where it will connect with a separate carrier line that discharges to the River Rhondda. Furthermore, these works will reduce the risk of flooding to the nearby Welsh Water combined sewer, by disconnecting the highway drainage along the A4058. This will increase the resilience of the sewer network in the local area.
