Wrexham Council has submitted a list of works totalling £3 million that could be carried out to improve Active Travel across the county borough if funds are made available by the Welsh Government.
Active Travel focuses on walking and cycling as a means of travelling on such as to work or school. It’s been high on our agenda for several years with works including the development of Active Travel Maps and a number of sessions of public consultation and engagement seeing a range of projects currently being developed for implementation.
The Welsh Government has recently written to Local Authorities requesting Expressions of Interest for sustainable transport measures.

From today (Friday 22nd May) the maximum fine for repeated breaches of the coronavirus lockdown rules in Wales will rise from £120 to £1,920, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced today.
The increased fines are being introduced ahead of the bank holiday weekend and they follow a request from the four police forces in Wales and the Police and Crime Commissioners for increased penalties to help deter people from repeatedly breaching the stay-at-home regulations.
Evidence from the four police forces show a small minority of people are breaking the coronavirus regulations, particularly by traveling to well-known beauty spots throughout Wales, even though they have been closed since the end of March.

Through its current campaign, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) is reminding motorists of the devastating impact speed can have; not only increasing the risk of a collision but the severity of the impact at higher speeds.
This week, Police forces across the country have been sharing messages across social media encouraging the motoring public to slow down and save lives. From Monday 25th May, visible speed enforcement activity will increase.
The NPCC reports, “On average 17 people are killed and 126 are seriously injured every month in the UK, where speed is believed to have been a significant factor.

Swansea Council has developed a walking and cycling route map to help guide residents along local routes in their communities.
With many residents choosing to walk or cycle as part of their daily exercise regime during the coronavirus restrictions, the Swansea Bayways Walk and Cycle Network map will help residents take advantage of routes on their doorstep.
The new map is part of the Council's ongoing efforts to encourage residents in the city to choose walking or cycling as a regular method of travelling for local journeys, as well as for health benefits.

To promote the Fatal 5 message, schools, colleges and youth organisations are invited to devise, perform and record a short film that will warn of the dangers and consequences of drink/drug driving, excess speed, careless driving, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone whilst driving. The winning entries will be shared on Road Safety Wales Partner social media channels to raise awareness about the Fatal 5.
Competition Guidelines
- Team members should be aged between 11 and 25.
- The presentation must be under 30 seconds in length and can include any of the following:
- Musical performance
- Drama/Sketch
- Poetry/Oration
- Animation
- Documentary
- Comedy
- Dance
- Entries should be submitted to Road Safety Wales, 2 Cwrt-y-Parc, Parc Ty Glas, Llanishen, Cardiff, CF14 5GH on DVD or to communication@roadsafetywales.org.uk in MP4/WMV format via WeTransfer.
- Entries should be accompanied by a short written summary describing the experience of creating the film and how it could be used to raise awareness of the Fatal 5.
- Any music, product or artwork included must be original and not subject to copyright laws or discriminate toward any individual, company or organisation (such as showing alcohol or cigarette brands).
- The presentation will be judged on originality, performance, impact and the message being portrayed.
Winning entries will be selected up to 4 times a year and successful teams will receive £250 for the school, college or organisation in Wales that they represent along with a commemorative plaque. Where appropriate, other entries may be rolled over for consideration within the next round of judging.

Lee Waters, the Welsh Government’s Deputy Transport Minister, has written to all local authorities inviting them to submit proposals for temporary measures that would improve the conditions for sustainable and active travel.
Coronavirus restrictions have led to significant reductions in traffic on roads, fewer people using public transport, and more people walking and cycling. The Welsh Government’s call to action is driven by the expectation that social distancing will need to be observed for months to come, as well as uncertainty around future transport patterns.
The lockdown has also seen a huge uptake in digital remote working, bringing the need to travel long distances for work into question.

Extending pavement space into the road, creating temporary cycleways, removing street furniture, carrying out a speed awareness campaign and re-designing public space around neighbourhood shopping centres are just some of the ideas being put forward by Cardiff Council immediately as part of the ongoing COVID-19 response.
Cardiff Council has been working hard behind the scenes to bring forward a number of pilot schemes designed to keep the public safe and able to socially distance in public spaces.
Cllr Caro Wild, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport at Cardiff Council said, "With social distancing expected to be the ‘new normal' for some time to come, this does pose a significant challenge both for residents and the local authority.

Last week marked 5 years since the Well-being of the Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 became Welsh law. A world first, which has changed the way Wales plans for the future. What helps set Wales apart is the work of the independent Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Sophie Howe in supporting this change and keeping the focus on the long term. On 4th May 2020, as part of her statutory duties, the Future Generations Commissioner published the first Future Generations Report on what has been achieved so far.
Built into the cycle of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 (WFG Act) are the publication of two 5-yearly reports, one from the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales and other from the Auditor General for Wales (AGW). These are required by law to be published one day and one year before a general election and together they give a periodic stock-take of the implementation of the Act.
These reports are both published against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of those public bodies subject to the Act are at the frontline of the challenges we face in dealing with Coronavirus. Both the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales and the Auditor General have reflected this context and made it clear that they will not be expecting Government and public bodies to provide a response to these reports in the short term.

Five weeks since Government restrictions were imposed, South Wales Police is continuing to see a small minority of individuals flouting lockdown guidelines.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Valentine, who is leading the force’s COVID-19 response, has stressed that the majority of the public are playing their part and following the rules, but that a small minority continue to put themselves and others at risk by flouting the legislation.
ACC Valentine said, “It is simply unacceptable that some people appear to believe the legislation does not apply to them. Every single person in society has a part to play in helping stop the spread of Coronavirus.
