Essential road works to take place on M4

Motorists are advised to plan ahead before they travel on the M4 between junctions 37 and 38 near Pyle as major road works to ensure the safety and long-term resilience of the motorway take place for 6 months beginning on 9 June.

The work involves refurbishment to 5 bridges on this stretch of the M4 and is essential to maintain safety and prevent deterioration of the road.

The motorway will remain open with two running lanes in both directions for the duration of the works. Closures will be limited to overnight only and will be well-signposted in advance. Temporary speed limits will also be implemented to ensure driver and worker safety.

The Great Bank Holiday Escape

Later, many of us will be heading off for a bank holiday or half term break. Before heading off it’s a good idea to check your vehicle to minimise the risk of a breakdown.

Road Safety Wales recommends using the P.O.W.D.E.R. check which consists of:

Petrol: have you got enough fuel or charge to comfortably complete your journey?
Oil: check the engine oil and brake fluid levels, making sure there are no leaks
Water: check that the coolant and windscreen washer reservoirs are at the correct level
Damage: look for damage, including the windscreen, and check the condition of your wiper blades
Electrics: are all the lights working? Are there any warning lights on the dashboard?
Rubber: check tyre pressures, tread depth and look for any damage, including the spare wheel.

If you have hired a vehicle, don’t assume that everything is perfect - do you own checks - and set up your driving position in advance. If it is a vehicle model that you have not driven before, take the time to work out where the controls and driver aids are situated.

Green light given for pothole repairs to begin on major Welsh roads

The £25m refurbishment programme, announced earlier this year by the Welsh Government, is funding 22 projects across Wales’ strategic road network.

The work will improve over 100km of road and help its future resilience by fixing and preventing around 30,000 potholes. This is in addition to the tens of thousands of potholes that are set to be fixed through a local government borrowing initiative, announced in March, enabling councils to unlock £120m of funding to accelerate repairs on local roads.

The programme of works, some of which is already underway, includes two bridge schemes to repair seven bridges, 18 resurfacing projects and two footway programmes covering 10 community locations throughout Wales.

Putting the brakes on illegal car meets and dangerous driving

Gwent Police has launched a proactive initiative to highlight the consequences and deter people from organising and attending illegal car meets and street racing.

Operation Wheeler, led by officers from the Roads Policing and Specialist Operations (RPSO) team, is tackling the anti-social and dangerous use of vehicles across Gwent and has already seen multiple arrests and convictions for those taking part in these meets.

382 illegal car meets were reported to Gwent Police between January 2020 and January 2025, with 144 reports being made last year. Car meets and street racing can have fatal consequences for those involved and the illegal and dangerous behaviour associated can have a ripple effect on the wider community.
