Schools across Torfaen were invited to take part in the Road Safety Anti Drink/Drug Driving Poster Competition 2017.
Torfaen Road Safety received 320 entries! From these, a number of senior and junior winners were picked as well as a number of runners up.
All the winners and runners up received a certificate and goodie bag with the winners also receiving a £10 voucher.

Motorists can now contribute to help Wales’s police forces keep roads safe by putting digital footage from dash cams and other devices to good use.
From today, as part of Operation Snap, members of the public throughout Wales can submit footage and images showing traffic offences being committed – from driving dangerously or carelessly to contravening solid white lines, using a mobile phone while driving or ignoring traffic lights.
Initially devised and piloted by the GoSafe unit in North Wales Police and the Road Casualty Reduction Partnership, the operation has now been introduced Wales-wide following further developments by South Wales Police and GoSafe. It will give members of the public the power to assist forces in taking action against those who put other road users at risk.

Pupils from Bedwas High School, have for the third consecutive year, been announced as winners of the Anti-Drink Driving Poster Competition, run by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
Every year the Road Safety Team arranges the competition which encourages school pupils to design a poster to remind residents of the serious consequences of drink driving. Bedwas High School has once again created some exceptional pieces of artwork, highlighting the risk a drink driver causes to themselves and other road users.
At a presentation on Friday 15 December, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Cllr. Sean Morgan and Susan Davies, Road Safety Projects Officer, presented awards and professionally printed copies of their winning designs to the overall winner Ellie Austen and runners up Tegan Fletcher and Tahlia Edwards.

The BBC has reported that two Welsh police forces have topped a list for charging the most motorists with drink-driving offences. The figures were gathered by the Press Association, from 45 police forces in the UK and the data covered a 12 month period to May 2017. They revealed North Wales Police prosecuted the second highest number of drink-drivers per population, while Dyfed-Powys Police was fourth.
It showed Lincolnshire Police prosecuted the most drivers per population, 14 per 10,000 population (1,035 motorists). This was followed by North Wales which made 11.2 charges per 10,000 (783 motorists) while Dyfed-Powys had 9.5 charges per 10,000 (493 motorists).
AA president Edmund King said the figures could be down to a number of factors, but whatever the reasons, "there is no excuse for drink-driving."

The Council’s Road Safety Team has completed a busy and successful week engaging with residents across the county borough, as part of Road Safety Week 2017.
Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, and is coordinated each year by road safety charity Brake. This year (November 20-26) its theme was ‘Speed Down, Save Lives’ to raise awareness of the problem of speeding motorists and the potential consequences of driving too quickly on our roads.
In Rhondda Cynon Taf, Road Safety Officers delivered numerous projects made possible through Welsh Government and Council funding. Below are the activities which took place:

Officers in Gwent are urging the public to let them know, anonymously, the details of motorists that drink or drug drive by using a NEW text service launched as part of the All Wales anti-drink and drug driving campaign.
If people know someone who drink or drug drives, they can text Gwent Police 24/7, and help keep our roads safe, on a new texting service.
All that is required is the Car Registration, Make, Model, Location, Time and Driver details if known, and the number to text the information to is 07464 645 100 (this is not a free number, texts are charged at normal rate).

Mollie Scourfield is the latest winner of the Pass Plus Cymru quarterly prize draw and was presented with her £200 prize on 29 November by the Mayor of Newport and the Cabinet Member for Streetscene.
Mollie, who was accompanied by her boyfriend and Nan, said that she felt that the additional experience gained from the training provided by Pass Plus Cymru was extremely useful, and the element dedicated to motorway driving was particularly worthwhile. As a means of improving the skills of young drivers like herself, she feels that Pass Plus Cymru is amazing and would recommend it. At £20, it represents excellent value for money.
The Mayor of Newport, Councillor David Fouweather, presented Mollie with her prize and said “I am delighted to be able to present this prize to Mollie.

During the past few months Road Safety Wales has been delighted to partner with the DVLA for the Wales National Coding Challenge for 7 to 11 year olds, in association with Code Club and the STEM Ambassador Hub Wales.
The challenge enabled pupils to develop their problem solving, communication and teamwork skills as well as improving their knowledge of computer programming in a fun and innovative way, with the opportunity to win amazing prizes and funding for IT equipment for their schools.
With challenge themes relating to road safety, pollution free oceans and anti-bully, the Road Safety Wales challenge called for pupils to build a game to highlight how young people can spot hazards and stay safe while cycling - an extremely important message for children in this age group.

“You should be under no illusion if you get behind the wheel whilst under the influence you not only risk your licence, get a fine or prison sentence, but you are risking lives too” – that is the message being driven by the Welsh Police Forces as they prepare to launch their Christmas Anti Drink and Drug Drive Campaign.
The month-long operation against driving under the influence begins on Friday, 1 December and police forces across the country will be using intelligence-led tactics and local knowledge of hotspots to detect people who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol over the festive period.
North Wales Police will lead the all Wales campaign and will be using social media to drive home the message the impact of drink and drug driving.
