Now that Road Safety Week has taken place we have been sent some fabulous photographs and video of the amazing things that school pupils in Merthyr Tydfil did for the week long event.
Many schools took part in initiatives across the whole week (see the earlier story too) to ask drivers to slow down in the areas around their schools and in the adjoining residential neighbourhoods. Dowlais School took the opportunity to reinforce the Be Bright be Seen message to their pupils as the afteroons become darker earlier and earlier.

The theme this year is Speed Down Save Lives. With everyone living busy lives there is a temptation to speed up in the hope of saving time, when in fact you will only arrive at your destination fractionally earlier than if you had driven within the posted speed limits.
Pupils engaged with parents at the school gate to pass on this and other important information about driving safely past their schools and within their community.
The annual Crucial Crew safety event, organised by Pembrokeshire County Council and supported by South Hook LNG, has once again passed on important safety lessons to over 1400 local schoolchildren, aged between ten and eleven years.
From the potential dangers of social media, to physical forms of wellbeing, children were guided through a series of workshops focusing on a range of topics from basic first aid, road safety, food hygiene and domestic abuse to beach safety, fire and power line awareness as well as behaviour around dogs. A number of agencies were on hand to guide children through realistic scenarios in which they need to recognise the importance of staying safe.
Commenting on the event, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, Cllr Phil Baker said: “We were delighted to welcome 46 schools to Crucial Crew this year. We’re very grateful to South Hook LNG for supporting such an important event, and to all the agencies which took part and made the event so enjoyable and informative for local children. If just some of the training stays with our young people it will help to save lives in the future.”
THINK! has today launched a new child road safety campaign and accompanying resources, with the first phase focussing on pupils aged three to six years.
The campaign features a suite of new education resources including ‘easy to follow’ lesson plans, two new films co-created with school children, and a song. The new resources are designed to make teaching road safety in schools easier and more accessible.
The first documentary-style film follows a group of pupils as they show how to cross the road safely after first learning to use the ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ code.
A test version of a new government service has launched to remind drivers by text message and email when their MOT is due. The GOV.UK service, developed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), makes it easy to get a reminder every year when your vehicle’s MOT is due.
When you sign up, you’ll get a reminder:
4 weeks before your MOT is due
2 weeks before your MOT is due, if you still haven’t had it tested
You’ll also get alerts that your vehicle no longer has an MOT.
Plans are in place to help keep Wales moving during the winter months, with over 216 thousand tonnes of salt and thirteen new frontline salt spreaders ready and waiting.
The winter of 2009/10 saw stocks at some local authorities reach crisis point, and Economy Secretary Ken Skates is keen to ensure Wales is fully prepared over the coming months, whatever the weather.
Carys Wilkinson is the latest winner of the Pass Plus Cymru prize draw. Carys, who attended the course in May 2017, was randomly selected by Road Safety Wales from drivers across Wales who had completed and returned evaluation questionnaires.
On Thursday 26th October, Carys was presented with her cheque by the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Dennis Keogh. This day was a double celebration for Carys who was also celebrating her 19th Birthday. Carys enjoyed a morning at the Mayor's Parlour accompanied by her father and grandmother.
Rhondda Cynon Taf's Road Safety Team is looking forward to Road Safety Week, at the end of November, with a programme of events for road users of all ages.
Tuesday 21 November: Working with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, GoSafe and Treorchy Primary School’s Junior Road Safety Officers, the team will be providing road safety information at an event at ASDA, Tonypandy. As part of the event a South Wales Fire and Rescue Service will be on site with a fire appliance and GoSafe will be present with a safety camera van, to interact with as many people as possible from the community to answer any questions and to offer road safety advice.
Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November: Year 2 pupils from all over Rhondda Cynon Taf will be participating in Kerbcraft, learning the essential skills needed to be safer child pedestrians. Focussing on everything from the basics of the Green Cross Code to crossing at difficult locations such as between parked cars and at junctions.
