Road safety operation carried out in Flint

Eyesight tests and road safety checks were conducted in Flint recently as part of a road safety operation carried out by officers from the Roads Crime Unit. Op Eyesight, which was held at the Fire Station on Coast Road, checked vehicles for roadworthiness and that the eyesight of the driver reached a required standard.

All drivers must be able to read a legal, clean registration plate from 20 metres in daylight conditions. Fortunately, of the 79 drivers stopped, all passed their eyesight test with no issues and the majority continued their journey within a couple of minutes.

Crucial Crew Marks 30 Years of Teaching Life-Saving Lessons

More than 1,500 Year 6 pupils from primary schools across Neath Port Talbot took part in this year’s Crucial Crew event, held over two weeks at the scenic Margam Country Park.

Now in its 30th year, Crucial Crew continues to play a vital role in preparing young people for the challenges and dangers they may face in everyday life. The event delivers a series of interactive workshops designed to help pupils:

  • Become more aware of personal safety
  • Learn how to react in dangerous situations
  • Avoid becoming victims of crime
  • Understand the role of emergency service
  • The event is organised annually by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Community Safety Team. Crucial Crew is one of their flagship initiatives, helping to educate the next generation with essential safety knowledge.
  • This year’s event featured workshops from a wide range of organisations, covering topics such as first aid, fire safety, healthy relationships, road safety, and more.

Targeting the #Fatal5 offences

A national #Fatal5 road safety campaign is running throughout July, as North Wales Police supports Operation Spotlight.

The four week-long campaign, led by the NPCC (National Police Chief’s Council) sees officers across the country carrying out a combination of enforcement activity as well as engagement and educational work aimed at raising awareness of the most common and dangerous road behaviours – the Fatal 5.

Diving whilst under the influence of drink and/or drugs, speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and careless /dangerous driving make up the #Fatal5 and North Wales Police has a robust strategy around enforcing these offences.

£1 bus fares for young people from September

Young people aged 16 to 21 will be able to ride on buses across Wales for just £1 from September.

Single fares will cost just £1 and there will be £3 day passes available too. It will allow young people to enjoy unlimited travel with any participating bus services from 1 September for a year.

The Welsh Government will extend the scheme to 5 to 15-year-olds from November. Existing reduced fares for children will apply until then.

Priorities identified as regional transport plan considered for approval

Ensuring buses and trains provide a practical and affordable alternative to travelling by car is a key priority for the South West Wales regional transport plan.

The priority was identified during consultation on a draft regional transport plan that's set to cover Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea.

Close to 900 people gave their feedback on the draft plan, which is aimed at creating a more reliable, connected and accessible transport network throughout the region, allowing residents to access essential services, education and employment while unlocking economic activity in South West Wales.

Major road maintenance works to commence this year

Denbighshire County Council will commence a major Welsh Government funded road maintenance programme this year.

The work across the county which will be spread over two years will be funded by a Welsh Government Local Government Borrowing Initiative (LGBI) to enable the programme to start.

This programme identified schemes for both 2025/26 and 2026/27 based on the total allocation of £4,780,699 for the two-year period from the Welsh Government.
