A further £3m is to be invested by the Welsh Government to recruit more emergency ambulance staff to improve response times for the most seriously ill or injured.
This additional funding will enable the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST) to recruit around 100 additional frontline staff and introduce a new ‘Cymru High Acuity Response Unit’ (CHARU) service. The CHARU service will seek to improve outcomes for people who have suffered cardiac arrest.
The additional staff will help to manage increased demand for emergency care and partially mitigate some of the complex wider system challenges which continue to place intense pressure on emergency care staff and services.

Construction work on a new active travel route for the strategic employment site at Brocastle in Bridgend has started, thanks to a £2 million investment by the Welsh Government.
The route, which is about 3km south-east of Bridgend town centre and runs parallel with the A48, will link the 116 acre site at Brocastle with the Waterton roundabout, 2km to the north-west.
A 2km cycleway, kerbing and surfacing works, new signalised road crossings, replacement traffic signals and street lighting will be built. The £2 million funding for the route, which is being provided by the Welsh Government, is the final package of the wider infrastructure works on the Brocastle site.

The first carbon-neutral road resurfacing work in Wales has been carried out by Cardiff Council.
Just under 13,000m2 of Northern Avenue, from the M4 slip road to Curlew Close, has been resurfaced using Slag Steel aggregate saving more than 50% in carbon outlay compared to using virgin aggregate in a conventional ‘surface course'.
The remaining carbon created in the resurfacing work will be offset using a Verified Carbon Scheme (VCS) - preventing further deforestation in Brazil - and by planting 100 saplings in the city in recognition of the scheme.

Powys County Council has secured further Welsh Government funding to extend and improve active travel routes within the county.
Committed to improving facilities for residents wishing to make short journeys on foot or by bike, the council has been working with communities to find potential active travel routes across Powys. Through engagement exercises and consultations, active travel routes which could either be improved or introduced have been identified and added to the councils Active Travel Network Maps (ATNM).

Legislation to lower the default national speed limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets from 30mph to 20mph has been approved by the Senedd today.
Wales becomes the first UK nation to make the move - helping to save lives, develop safer communities, improve the quality of life and encourage more people to make more sustainable and active travel choices.
The new slower speed limits are currently being trialled in eight communities across Wales and will be rolled out nationally in September 2023.

The summer Tenby Pedestrianisation scheme is now in operation and will run daily between 11am and 5.30pm until Friday 9th September.
The scheme will again see the town divided into three zones with each zone allowing different levels of vehicle access.
Residents within the walled town are reminded that should they wish to apply for an access permit then this must be done online as soon as possible at www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/tenby-pedestrianisation.

Many motorcyclists consider a ride through Wales to be the perfect summer pastime; who could argue with the freedom of the open road in beautiful scenery, often with a group of friends.
Sue Storch, Vice Chair of Road Safety Wales, shares some advice for riders venturing out during the summer months, to help ensure a comfortable ride and a safe return home: “Riding a motorcycle safely is both physically and mentally demanding. Although it’s an aspect that can be easily overlooked, becoming dehydrated can increase the risk of a collision as it can cause a loss of concentration, headaches, muscle fatigue, drowsiness and nausea.”

The Welsh Government has published Police Recorded Road Casualties, Wales, 2021.
Police recorded road accident and casualty numbers throughout most of 2020 were affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which saw restrictions on how, where and why people could travel within Wales. There was continued impact in 2021.

Monmouthshire County Council has received Welsh Government Active Travel funding of £3.4m for the financial year 22/23 with the aim of reducing everyday car journeys, and making walking, cycling and wheeling the easiest option.
Monmouthshire’s Active Travel strategic focus is on journeys shorter than 3.0 miles to education, employment, shopping, health destinations, bus and rail stations, and details of the schemes will be developed in partnership with local people.
