New changes to the Highway Code, including putting pedestrians at the top of a new “road user hierarchy”, have been announced by the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps.
The proposed changes, which are due to receive parliamentary approval in the autumn, will also give pedestrians priority at zebra crossings and junctions as well as raising further awareness about the dangers of speeding.

Inappropriate speed contributes to around 11% of all injury collisions reported to the police, with 15% of those collisions resulting in a serious injury and 24% resulting in fatalities.
On the 26th July, the National Police Chief Council (NPCC) Speed Campaign began across the UK, with GoSafe and the four Welsh Police Forces participating in both engaging with the public about the risks of speeding and enforcing the speed limits on the roads of Wales.
In 2019, 60,073 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued in Wales to drivers/riders for speeding.

A suspected drink driver was arrested after a police dog tracked him for two miles along a cycle path.
Dyfed-Powys Police dog Storm and his handler PC Mike Barnsley located the driver following a collision on the B4343 between Bont and Tregaron on Sunday, 25 July.
Officers had attended the scene of the collision, discovering that a car had hit a tree and overturned – however, the driver was not present.

Members of the public can now submit evidence of anti-social driving, owing to the work of Gwent Police and the safety camera partnership, GoSafe.
Through the existing scheme, Operation SNAP, road users have been able to submit evidence of dangerous driving recorded on dashcams. Now, members of the public will also be able to send footage of anti-social road use directly to the police.
Footage can be submitted from many different sources including mobile phones, CCTV and other recording devices.

Everyone can travel for free by bus around Swansea throughout the summer.
Swansea Council is funding the initiative to support families and boost retail, leisure and tourism as Swansea emerges from lockdown.
It will also help reduce emissions and congestion by encouraging people onto buses rather than using their car every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

After some miserable weather to start the year, the sunshine and warmer days have been welcomed by most people!
However, for those spending most of the day at home or those who don’t have the luxury of air conditioning in their workplace, the heat can be exhausting. Coupled with higher temperatures at night making it difficult to sleep for the past few days, some people may be unaware of the risks of driving while tried.
A driver or rider who has fallen asleep cannot brake or swerve so unfortunately collisions tend to involve high speed impacts, often resulting in death or serious injury.

A woman who was over three times the drink drive limit and who will appear before court next month was among several drink and drug drive arrests made by the North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit over the weekend.
The 39-year-old from Manchester was stopped on the A55 at St Asaph shortly after 6pm on Friday evening after an emergency call had been made to the Control Room telling officers she had been seen drinking in a bar nearby.
An officer stopped her on the eastbound carriageway where she was breathalysed. She failed the roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to police custody where she provided a further reading of 124mg – the legal limit is 35mg per 100 ml of breath.

GoSafe has launched a brand new Operation SNAP Submitters Portal.
The webpage will allow members of the public who submit footage via Operation SNAP to access updates on the outcome of their submissions, as well as be informed on the retention requirements of the original footage they submitted.
Since 2017, members of the public have been submitting footage of dangerous and careless driving they have witnessed on the roads of Wales to the Police via Operation SNAP.

Work on the second phase of an active travel route in the Pencoed area starts today, Monday 19 July and will last for around 13 weeks.
As part of the £580,000 scheme, existing networks in Pencoed will be connected at Felindre Road with the installation of a three-metre wide footway/cycleway. This section completes the missing link between Felindre Road to the east of Pencoed Cemetery, and the existing network in Pencoed that goes as far as Felindre Roundabout/Pencoed Technology Park.
The network will also be connected to Ty Merchant and Penprysg. This will see a new footway/cycleway created on both sides of Penybont Road, a new toucan crossing to the west of Ty Merchant, and cycle ‘wheeling ramps’ installed on the footbridge that connects Ty Merchant over the railway. Carriageway resurfacing will also take place along Penybont Road.

“Achieving a shift from private cars to walking and cycling as well as public transport is essential for meeting our net zero carbon emission target, and a key commitment of Llwybr Newydd, the new Wales Transport Strategy we published earlier this year.
“This requires people in Wales to have access to coherent, high quality walking and cycling routes that connect where they live to where they need to go. The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 requires local authorities to plan and deliver networks of those routes. Today I am publishing updated Active Travel Act Guidance to help them fulfil this duty.
