Speeding HGV drivers were targeted last weekend as part of North Wales Police's ongoing commitment to safer roads.
Following recent public concern regarding speeding through the current roadworks on the A55 at Tal y Bont near Bangor, officers from the Roads Policing Unit carried out an operation.
A total of 13 drivers in foreign-registered vehicles were stopped and issued with Graduated Fixed Penalty Notices – meaning they had to pay ‘on the spot’ fines.

Work will begin in the New Year on work to make crossing the road in a section of Merthyr Tydfil town centre safer for pedestrians.
Following a public consultation last summer, an ‘informal crossing’ at Victoria Street will become a zebra crossing with a much wider raised area for pedestrians.
The project is one of a series of walking and cycling improvement schemes being carried out by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council as part of its Welsh Government-funded Active Travel programme.

Plans for the introduction of pilot 20mph zones across Monmouthshire were raised at Monmouthshire County Council’s full council meeting on Thursday 16th December. The Welsh Government scheme will see 20mph zones introduced in phases, the first of which will include eight communities, two of which are in Monmouthshire.
Councillor Jane Pratt, cabinet member for Infrastructure said: “We appreciate that many towns and villages across the county support the reduction of speed on our roads. The benefits of lowering the urban speed limit from 30mph to 20mph will contribute to a reduction in the frequency and severity of road collisions, more opportunities to walk and cycle in our communities, make our streets safer and help to safeguard the environment for future generations.
“At this time, pilot projects in Abergavenny and Severnside are being prioritised, with consultation for the Traffic Order scheduled to commence on 22nd December and running for 28 days. The consultation period has been extended to account for the Christmas break. Provided there are no objections raised that cannot be resolved, the 20mph zones will be implemented in February in Abergavenny and Severnside. We’re grateful for the support received from the Welsh Government and Transport for Wales officers.”

Thousands of potholes and hundreds of road repairs and upgrades are helping keep city traffic on the move backed by £5.3m of council funding in Swanea.
Since the start of the year 3,500 potholes have been fixed and more than 200,000 sqm of road surfaces on main roads and side streets have been upgraded as part of major improvement works. In the last month alone around 30,000 sqm of skid-resistant road resurfacing has been carried out on more than a dozen roads in the countdown to the winter months.
Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment Enhancement and Infrastructure Management, said, "Despite the pandemic, our highways teams have been very extremely busy throughout 2021 filling in thousands of potholes, 99% of them within 48 hours of being reported.

Winter is well and truly here, and with the colder mornings and nights now upon us, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is doing all it can to keep the main roads open and residents moving while on their journeys. With the winter weather closing in on us, the Council’s Highways team is on call and available, whatever the weather.
While most people are fast asleep in their beds at night, with fewer vehicles on the road, the Council’s highways road salting fleet can often be found making their way around the County Borough’s 125km of priority routes. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Out Of Hours Response Team travel the County Borough whenever inclement weather is forecast, including the festive season, on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day if needed.
This could mean treating the main network across the County Borough, treating Council car parks and treating higher routes, depending on the severity of the expected conditions.

North Wales Police Officers have made over 30 arrests as part of the first week of the Christmas Anti Drink and Drug Drive Campaign.
Since the start of the campaign on 1st December, 21 drink drive and 14 drug drive arrests have been made across the region.
The highest reading of the campaign so far has been 123 (the legal limit is 35) whereby a 50-year-old man was arrested on the outskirts of Caernarfon shortly after 5pm on December 2nd. The man, who is from the Wirral area has since been charged with drink driving and will appear before Caernarfon Magistrates Court on Monday, December 20th.

Officers spoke to 100 drivers in Blaenau Gwent between October and November to check their vehicles were fit for the road and share some winter maintenance advice.
PC Phillip Thomas said: “We’re committed to increasing road safety and have recently been talking to drivers about the steps they can take to ensure their vehicles are safe to be driven.
“Now that we’re in December, where icy roads, dark evenings and changeable driving conditions are commonplace, it’s important road users keep themselves and others safe by undertaking vital maintenance checks.”

Bridgend County Borough Council has confirmed that it is introducing new temporary measures at three local schools following an assessment of how their drop-off points are currently being used.
From today, Monday 6 December, the drop-off areas located at Pencoed Primary, Brynmenyn Primary and Coleg Cymunedol y Dderwen will only be available for use by staff working at the school, parents and carers who are Blue Badge holders, and home-to-school transport vehicles provided by the local authority.
The move follows monitoring by council staff which has confirmed that if used correctly, the drop-off points offer a safe, convenient way for parents and carers to take children to school.

With the festive season about to take off, police officers in Wales are reminding people who are looking forward to a night out not to get behind the wheel after drinking or consuming drugs.
The four Welsh police forces – North Wales Police, Gwent Police, South Wales Police and Dyfed-Powys Police - are today launching their Christmas Anti-Drink and Drug Drive Campaign which aims to catch people who risk their life and the lives of others by getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
Dyfed-Powys Police Superintendent Clark Jones-John said the reason for the operation was to try and prevent the needless loss of life at the hands of irresponsible drivers who flout the law.
