Publication of Ceredigion’s new Active Travel Maps

During 2020 and 2021, Ceredigion County Council undertook a public consultation exercise as part of a review into the Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) in Ceredigion.

This review looked at updating Ceredigion’s Existing Routes Map to highlight active travel routes that have been audited to meet Welsh Government Design Guidance standards, but also to draft a new Future Routes Map that would include proposed or aspirational active travel routes. These maps were previously known as the ‘Integrated Network Map’ and periodically reviewing them is part of the statutory duties that all Local Authorities in Wales are required to do under the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013.

The draft ATNM for Ceredigion was submitted to Welsh Government at the end of March 2022 and the Minister for Climate Change approved the maps on 03 August 2022 ready for publishing.

Council updates Town and Community Council Forum on new 20mph speed limit plans

Bridgend County Borough Council have updated the Town and Community Council Forum about the new 20mph speed limits which are likely to be introduced across Bridgend County Borough.

In 2021, Welsh Government identified changing the default speed limit from 30mph to 20mph in built-up areas as one of its key priorities to reduce traffic related injuries and fatalities, as well as making walking and cycling a safer and more attractive option to the public.

It is proposed that a much wider take up of 20mph limits will achieve significant road safety benefits across local communities.

Illegal E-Scooter Use: How Can Retailers Play Their Part?

As we approach Christmas, some of us may be considering purchasing an e-scooter as a gift. However, a number of people are still unaware that it is illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter on public roads, pavements or cycle paths. In fact, the only place to legally ride an e-scooter in Wales is on private land with the permission of the land owner – everywhere else it is against the law.

Road Safety Wales is urging retailers to ensure that potential customers are fully aware that if an e-scooter is purchased and subsequently used illegally, the rider risks being issued with a £300 fine, 6 penalty points on their driving licence and their new e-scooter could also be seized.

Retail outlets across the country are at the forefront of providing expert advice to the public and selling products that are safe to use. A commitment to making customers aware of the current regulations around e-scooters will enhance the retailer’s reputation and greatly assist in minimising the road safety risk.

FIFA World Cup

Ahead of Wales’ first game at the FIFA World Cup, Road Safety Wales is reminding people to plan ahead if they intend to drink alcohol.

Many people have waited a generation to see Wales get to the World Cup and we are encouraging everyone to remember this momentous occasion for all the right reasons.

If you are drinking alcohol, please make arrangements to get home, before you go out. Save the number of a local taxi in your phone, find out times of public transport or arrange a lift with someone sober. Just remember that if you’re asking a sober family member or friend to come and pick you up late at night or in the early hours of the morning, please be aware that they may be too tired to drive - fatigue can be a contributory factor in up to 20% of collisions.
