Subsidised bus journeys to return for the entire month of December

Cheaper bus travel will once again be applied across Rhondda Cynon Taf over the upcoming festive period – with a maximum single fare of £1 being applied to local journeys in December 2024.

The subsidised cost for bus journeys will apply for the entire month, from Sunday 1 December to Tuesday 31 December. It will apply to all journeys that start and end within the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough boundary and will be adopted by all bus operators. This will apply from the first service to the last service each day, with no time restrictions in place for commuters.

This is the fifth period since summer 2023 when the £1 maximum bus fare has been applied in Rhondda Cynon Taf. These included the festive period last year and was most-recently used over the six-week summer holiday in 2024.

Cabinet Secretary welcomes Flintshire County Council becoming the first local authority to consult on roads where 20mph may change

The Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates has welcomed Flintshire County Council becoming the first local authority to announce the start of the statutory process on roads where changes to the 20mph speed limit may take place.

Local authorities have been in the process of listening and reviewing feedback from people, business, and communities across Wales to ensure 20mph is targeted on the right roads. This follows the publication of revised guidance by the Welsh Government in July to support them.

Flintshire County Council has begun publishing their Transport Regulation Orders (TRO) for roads they have assessed could possibly be safely changed back to 30mph by starting with a proposal to change the speed limit on two roads in Flintshire.

Reducing the number of motorcyclists injured or killed in Wales remains a priority

With its breathtaking scenery and varied road network, Wales holds a major attraction for both local motorcyclists and those from further afield.

Although Welsh roads are among the safest in the world, a motorcyclist is 58 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a collision than a person travelling in a car or taxi. Reducing the number of motorcyclist casualties across Wales therefore remains a priority.

There were 536 motorcyclist casualties recorded by police in 2023 with 268 of those being killed or seriously injured.

A fall in year-on-year collisions and casualties

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates has announced the latest police recorded road collision statistics from April to June 2024 show that both collisions (24%) and casualties (24%) on 20mph and 30mph roads (combined) have fallen by almost a quarter compared to the same period of 2023 - the lowest recorded outside of the pandemic.

In the first nine months since the introduction of 20mph in September 2023, the number of collisions (26%) and casualties (28%) on 20mph and 30mph roads (combined) were down by more than a quarter. The three quarterly reductions within this period are the three largest quarterly reductions outside the pandemic period.

Because data is impacted by seasonal factors such as traffic volume and weather conditions it is both advisable and meaningful for statistics to be compared with the same period year on year rather than for consecutive periods. For example, data recorded between April-June (Q2) historically tends to be higher than between January-March (Q1). This has been the case in 11 of the last 15 years.

Looking out for vulnerable road users as the clocks change

With the clocks being turned back one hour this weekend (Sunday 27th October) and daylight hours growing shorter, Road Safety Wales is reminding road users to take extra care and remain vigilant when out and about in the dark.

The arrival of autumn often brings worsening weather and reduced visibility, increasing the risk of collisions, particularly involving vulnerable road users such as children, older people, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Teresa Ciano, Chair of Road Safety Wales, called for extra vigilance as darker evenings begin; “Darkness creates more challenging conditions for road users. Motorists should drive considerately and reduce their speed to meet the traffic and weather conditions.

Traffic enforcement cameras to be utilised to improve road safety and traffic flow

Carmarthenshire County Council has an ambition to make the roads in Carmarthenshire safer and reduce traffic congestion.

Two sites have been identified by the County Council as sections of road which could see the number of collisions and traffic congestion decreasing through the installation of traffic enforcement to encourage compliance and improve safety.

The two locations that will see the introduction of traffic enforcement cameras are Inkerman Street junction with Murray Street in Llanelli enforcing the no right turn order and the enforcement of stopping on the yellow box markings on the A4138 at Hendy (Junction 48 of the M4).
