Successful road safety operation using an unmarked HGV

Officers from the Roads Crime Unit detected almost 90 offences last month as part of Operation Tramline, a roads policing operation using an unmarked heavy goods vehicle.

Across several days in August, North Wales Police had exclusive access to a specialist HGV tractor unit provided by National Highways, which was used to carry out patrols across the strategic road network. The elevated position of the HGV cab allowed trained officers to easily see what drivers were doing and the offences were captured and recorded on camera.

Once suspected offences were identified, officers from the Roads Crime Unit intercepted the identified vehicles and stopped drivers at the roadside or they were brought into a checkpoint to be spoken to.

Neath Port Talbot Council is inviting residents to give their views on proposals to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling (Active Travel) routes across towns and villages in the county borough.

Through the enhancement of existing infrastructure and the development of new routes, the council aims to make Active Travel the preferred mode of transport for local journeys. This initiative supports improved air quality, healthier lifestyles, and the overall attractiveness of communities as places to live and work.

The Active Travel Network Map outlines the routes the council intends to prioritise for future improvements. It is designed to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible for all, particularly for those who do not currently travel actively and those who use mobility aids.

Active Travel and Safer School Routes Boosted in Brynmawr

Brynmawr is now benefiting from improved Active Travel infrastructure, thanks to the completion of a new footpath and toucan crossing designed to make walking, cycling, and school journeys safer and more accessible.

It is hoped that improvements to the active travel network will reduce the reliance on cars and people will choose walking and cycling as their mode of transport for short, purposeful journeys.

A newly constructed footpath now links the Brynmawr subways directly to National Cycle Network Route 46. Designed by the Council and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the project was delivered by local contractor Nigel Sullivans Groundworks & Plant Hire.

Planning a Bank Holiday Ride Out

Motorcycling alone is great but riding out with a group of friends can take it to a whole new level. Learning to look out for every member of the group will help bikers enjoy it even more.

For those new to group riding it’s easy to get pushed into riding beyond your ability or experience. To help avoid this, Wales By Bike recommends riding with people you trust; real friends will respect your skill level and will ride accordingly.

If you're an experienced rider and a new rider joins your group, be responsible and encourage the group to look after them. Novices welcome the support of fellow bikers in becoming more experienced in group riding, without being pushed too hard to keep up.

Operation Atal

Engagement plays a crucial role in road safety. GoSafe has worked with the Welsh Fire and Rescue Service, Local Authorities and Welsh Police Forces to engage with the public since inception.

Engagement sessions have been used to work with every road user group including motorcyclists, young/older drivers, cyclists, horse riders, and school children. This is often done in combination with operational work at the roadside. People monitored driving above the speed limit or not wearing a seat belt are stopped by the police. They are the given an option of immediately attending an educational session with the Fire and Rescue Services or accepting a fixed penalty. This is currently a £100 on the spot fine for a seat belt offence or £100 and 3 points on your licence for a speeding offence.

Teams have worked together to conduct vehicle safety checks, eye-sight tests, drink/drug impairment tests, and child car seat checks whilst carrying out the operations.

Pioneering road safety initiative to make motorcycling safer

A pioneering new road safety initiative that is designed to make motorcycling safer has been introduced in North and Mid Wales.

Following a highly successful trial in Scotland — where over 32,000 motorcyclist journeys were analysed across 22 sites, the Welsh Government, in partnership with the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA), has rolled out PRIME markings at four key sites in North and Mid Wales.
