North Wales Police is supporting the national Op Spotlight Young Drivers campaign, helping to promote safer driving through engagement, positive action and enforcement.
Over the next two weeks, the campaign aims to raise awareness among young and newly qualified drivers about the importance of safe and responsible driving, while encouraging positive choices that can help reduce the risk of serious collisions and save lives on our roads.
As part of the campaign, officers from North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit will be engaging with young drivers, providing advice and guidance around key road safety issues including the Fatal Five, which are drink and drug driving, speeding, using a mobile phone behind the wheel, no seatbelt and driving in a manner that puts themselves or others at risk.

TrydaNi gives drivers access to electric cars across Wales in a way that is affordable, convenient and beneficial to local communities.
- The TrydaNi car sharing scheme currently operates 13 car clubs across Wales, with more than 500 members
- The scheme is backed by £1 million of Welsh Government funding
- The Aberystwyth car club launched in December 2024 and has 99 members Backed by £1 million of Welsh Government funding, the scheme is open to individuals, businesses and non-profit organisations, and has grown to more than 500 members, with numbers rising as new clubs open.
This year TrydaNi has launched clubs in Swansea, Penygroes, and Abergavenny, and will soon also launch a club in Bangor. Since launching in December 2024, the Aberystwyth club has grown to 99 members, who share access to two electric vehicles, a Vauxhall Combo Life Electric and a Renault Zoe, based at North Road car park in Aberystwyth. Simon LePine, a member of the Aberystwyth club said: My wife and I have not owned a car for at least 15 years, so the car is our only access to a vehicle. It allows us to use a car when we need it without worrying about parking, insurance, and all of that other stuff when we don’t need the car. The scheme is particularly useful for people in rural areas, where public transport provision can be limited and access to a car may be more essential than for those living in towns and cities.
The Deputy Minister for Transport, Mark Hooper, visited Aberystwyth's TrydaNi car club to see first-hand how Welsh Government funding is helping communities access affordable, zero-emission transport. He said: Car clubs are an easy and affordable way for people to share use of a car without the cost of owning one. I’m so pleased to see the scheme expanding. It’s just one of the ways we can help cut carbon emissions and move towards a net zero future. People not only have the option of giving up their own car or a second car but also can benefit from the real-world experience of driving electric without a long-term commitment. Cars can be hired on an hourly or daily basis. Members can book and unlock vehicles through the TrydaNi app, with costs starting from £2 per hour (capped at £30) plus 16p per mile for the first 100 miles. Each club also has an optional WhatsApp group for members, and a dedicated support team is available by phone between 8am and 10pm, seven days a week. Members can become Community Champions that allows them to earn credits by helping to clean and maintain the vehicles.

All existing entitlements to free home to school transport will remain in place under Cardiff Council’s new Home to School Transport Policy, which sets out how learner travel needs will be assessed and how free transport will be provided for eligible pupils across the city. The policy also aims to make information, advice and guidance easier for families to access and understand.
Subject to Cabinet approval, the proposed policy reflects the Council's duties under the Learner Travel (Wales) Measure 2008 and confirms that eligible primary pupils living two miles or more from their nearest suitable school, and secondary pupils living three miles or more away, will qualify for free home-to-school transport. Eligibility will continue to be assessed based on the nearest suitable school and the shortest available walking route.
The policy also provides greater clarity on a range of transport issues including Welsh-medium and faith school transport, dual residency arrangements, safeguarding responsibilities, behavioural standards, and support for children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN).

Cardiff Council is using a specialist thermal road repair machine to help repair potholes and damaged road surfaces across the city, following the unprecedented number of highway defects caused by last winter's prolonged wet weather and cold snaps.
The machine uses a heat-based process to repair potholes, while reducing carbon emissions by up to 85% compared with a conventional dig-and-fill repair technique. It works by heating the existing road surface before new material is applied, allowing much of the existing material to be reused and creating a stronger bond between the old and new surface. Where the machine can be used, the process removes the need for traditional cuts around the repair area and eliminates joints that can allow water to penetrate the road surface and weaken repairs over time.
Cllr Ed Stubbs, Cardiff Council's Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, said: "Keeping Cardiff's roads safe and in good condition is a priority for us, and we're constantly looking at ways to improve how we maintain our highway network, with the budget available.
